As a freshman I believed that getting by with just about a B average was great. I did not work to my fullest potential because I felt it was not necessary to get all A’s.   I was devastated when I received my grades after the spring semester of my freshman year due to the fact that my grade point average was not high enough to apply for the Commonwealth Honors College. I now realize that in order for me to actually do well, I must put forth more effort than I had been previously. I should not try to settle for an average grade, but I should go above and beyond what is expected. As a member of the Honors College, I will get that extra push to do well in the honors courses I enroll in.  
The Emerging Scholars Residential Academic Program was one thing that really kept me motivated to do well and one day apply to the Honors College. Through this program I learned a lot of what there was to know about Honors College. I took interesting honors courses that had me thinking in ways that I never imagined. The topics discussed were real issues that drew me to do more research. In one of the seminars we discussed the poor health of low income families and how they are not recieving the adequate resources to live healthy life styles. Being someone that wants to one day work in the medical field, I found this very interesting and knew immediately that I want to help resolve this issue. In Kinesiology we discuss a lot about exercise and various ways of maintaining good health. With my knowledge from kinesiology courses and the research I have done in the honors seminar I would like to use this as my topic for my Independent Capstone Experience. The Capstone Experience is one thing that really attracted me to the Honors College. It seems like an interesting yet challenging way to get students to do research and work directly with professionals in their chosen field of study.
