2. Summary:

Chapter 1: “The end begins”
The “I” person is in a hospital because of an accident he had a few days earlier. He has his head completely in bandages, because his eyes were severely wounded in the accident and this was an attempt to restore them. Because of that he is just one of a few people who missed a great spectacle: the passing of the earth through comet debris. When he wakes up the next day, he feels that something is terribly wrong: no sound of traffic and although it’s already eight o’clock, still no nurse came by to wash him, while she should already have been there at 7. Because his bandages were going to be removed that day, he risks it to remove them himself, finding his eyesight completely restored. He starts walking trough the building and finds out that everybody is blinded, apparently, by the meteor shower.
Chapter 2: “The coming of the Triffids”
A few years earlier, a man called Umberto Christoforo Palanguez goes to one of the biggest fish-oil factories in the world with a sample of some kind of oil. The oil is much better than any known oil until then, so the company is very interested in this product. It appears that the oil is from a plant, a plant from which Umberto can get the seeds from. The seeds have to be smuggled out of Russia, so it is arranged that the seeds will be delivered by plane. But the plane is shot by the Russians and the seeds are blown by the wind to the far corners of the earth.
The introduction of the Triffid for the “I” person came early: one of them grew in their garden. After a while it appeared that the triffids could “walk” in a rather clumsy way on their 3 “legs” and, much worse, could sting with a sort of tentacle, which holds a harmful poison.
