The Effects of Drugs on the Autonomic Nervous System
Group : Name: _______________
Aim: To determine the mydriatic and miotic effects of selected drugs on the rabbit eye.
Introduction
In general many organs are innervated by both the parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system which tend to have opposite effects. A balance between the two divisions provides a mechanism for the maintenance of homeostatis.
Procedure
1. Two rabbits were obtained and marked (rabbit-1 and rabbit-2) and two drugs were taken (one is Drug-A and the other is Drug-B)
2. First measure the pupils of each eye to obtain a control. Measure the pupil size(pupil length)by using ruler.
3. Then administer one or two drops of drug A to the rabbit-1 and drug-B to the rabbit-2 and measure the pupil size for every 10 min.
4. Based on the pupil size you have to find which drug is mydriatic and which drug is miotic.
5. Control value is always same for each interval (0min, 10min, 20min, 30min, 40min)
