Good Friend, for Jesus’ sake forbear
To dig the dust enclosed here:
Blessed be the man that spares these stones,
And curst be he that moves my bones.

Now to me, this says, "Don't dig me up". Unfortunately Shakespeare did not seem to go far enough with his epitaph, in retrospect he should have explained that moving his bones and disturbing his final resting place did in fact cover scientifically drug testing him 400 years after his passing.
A South African anthropologist wants to open the grave of William Shakespeare in order to discover whether the world’s greatest writer smoked cannabis. Their defence is, that with modern technology they will not, in fact have to move Shakespeare's bones but can digitally scan them with lasers so as to build facial reconstructions to confirm the skeletons’ identities and look for markers of health and signs of disease in the bones. they intend to do this study on Shakespeare, his wife, Anne Hathaway and his daughter. What I want to know is why??
Why is this necessary? I am completely for developing our knowledge of the Bard and knowing more about him. But do you not think that this is too far?? One of the greatest things about Shakespeare (obviously apart from his writings) is the level of mystery surrounding him, there is so much speculation around this one man that over 120,000,000 google pages are atributed to him alone, more than brad pitt and cheryl cole put together!! this level of longevity and popularity stems not only from his grasp of the english language and masterful way with words, but also from the shroud of mystery that surrounds him. As soon as we know everything there is to know about him, he becomes just another man, just another playwright. Just another Kit Marlowe. (who is Kit Marlowe? I hear you ask... A playwright, such as Shakespeare, that we know most things about so has no element of mystery and, as such no longevity through desire for knowledge)
The amount of speculation covering his identity...
