Throughout the story Swallowing Stones, Michael is faced with multiple problems. Each problem he is faced with he has to make a choice. The choices he makes impact his self or another character’s life. On Michael's 17th birthday his grandfather gives him a rifle; which he fires into the air. Michael finds out that the mystery death of Charlie Ward who is Jenna Ward father could have been him. He then questions himself if he could be the killer and if he could get away with it. Michael decides that he can trust Joe not to say anything. When Michael makes this decision, he doesn’t think about the outcome. Michael then starts to avoid his friend Joe because he has made him an accessory to the crime. Michael is filled with guilt as more people are becoming involved and getting hurt. During the book Michael is going through a lot of emotional struggle, and is thinking on deeper and entirely new levels.

Meanwhile Jenna is filled wit guilt and questions. At first she had wanted revenge for who ever killed her dad, so she could fill the emptiness inside her, but later realized that she just wanted it to end. Jenna realized she had to come to terms with herself before she could truly accept her father's death. Jenna started using math equations to help her because it was the only thing that had an exact answer to. The death of her father messes with her personal life when she begins to have panic attacks around her boyfriend (Jason). Both Jenna and Michael's private lives are then filled with misunderstanding, break ups, new friends and broken trust. All of this mixed in with anxiety
