My Grandma
My grandma’s name is Wei Xiuping. She was born in her parents’ house in Jing Chen Village, in Fu Qing City, Fu Jian Province. She was born on 2nd December, 1936. Her mum was 20 years old when she gave birth to my grandma, and her dad was 30. She was the oldest child in the family. She had two younger brothers and one younger sister. There was a ten-year gap between the oldest and the youngest child. Her dad was a fisherman and a farmer and her mum was a housewife. Their house wasn’t very big.
My grandma was very lucky to be able to attend primary school when she was eleven years old. At that time, very few girls had the opportunity to go to school. There were 35 to 40 pupils in one class. She reminisced in 1953, when she was in primary six, there was a war between the Kuomintang and the communists. She and her classmates had to fix roads. Compared to her, I am very fortunate to be able to attend school and not have to do manual labor. After that, she went to secondary school and finally graduated from Teachers College at the age of 25.
My grandma is a very fine woman. Although she’s nearly 75 years old, she looks like she’s only 60. Let me tell you a joke. A few years ago, we went to the Beijing Architectural Museum. My grandma was 73. We went to the ticket booth and bought tickets. My mother bought a normal ticket, my sister and I bought the half-priced kid tickets, and my grandma bought the elderly ticket. When my grandma asked for an elderly ticket, the lady sitting inside the ticket booth said, “You are not old enough to qualify for the elderly ticket.” My grandma said, “But I am already 73! All elderly people over 65 can qualify!” “You don’t look like you are 73! Show me your ID!” the ticket lady exclaimed. Luckily, my grandma brought her ID with her, and she got an elderly ticket as wished.
Yep, that’s my grandma. Would you like to meet her?
