The Social Web has become successful in its efforts on connecting people from all around the world. “The Social Web is a set of social relations that link people through the World Wide Web. It encompasses how websites and software are designed and developed in order to support and foster social interaction. These online social interactions form the basis of much online activity including online shopping, education, gaming and social networking websites” (4). However, these interactions within the Social Web and its success are drastically overshadowed by an abundance of negativity. The Social Web has opened the door for addiction, cyber-bullying, and privacy abuse.
Addiction
The Social Web has created a new genre for addiction. It’s far from the typical drug or alcohol addiction, as it consumes a lot of one’s time. “Not only do we check Facebook and Twitter throughout the day, almost half of the respondents said they check in on the social media scene in bed, during the night, or as soon as they wake up in the morning” (1). I can honestly say that this relates to me, and that I am addicted to Facebook. It is so bad that if someone sends me a message on Facebook, it goes directly to my phone. I am constantly on Facebook on my phone trying to be nosey and seeing what everybody else is doing or posting. I can attest to being on this site for a total of three plus hours a day. It’s mind boggling just mentioning this, because the reality of my addiction has set in. I’m just sitting here wondering what I could possibly be doing for this long of a time period, but I quickly discovered my answer.
Most of the time I am checking my friend’s updates for quite a bit of time, and then I log off. I try to stay off of the site, but the updates are so constant, that I have to log back in to see the newer posts that I hadn’t initially viewed. Then there are the times where I’m actually...
