The Influence of the Bible on American People’s Name

  ⅠIntroduction
If you have a name you like, you already know how pleasant it is going through life with a name that “fits”. If you don’t, you know how unpleasant it is to go through life with a name that, for any number of reasons, doesn’t work for you, so American people also give importance to their names.
Americans always seek given names gleaned from the Bible. Even though some Americans don’t believe in God, they adopt names of believers whose names, with the exception of those of American immigrants, have their roots in other parts of the world. Generally speaking, American people like Biblical names to their children because of the historical reason (people founded their country based on Christianity) and American people’s faith (they believe in God) as well as the influence of the biblical stories.
American people’s names are fascinating. Their meanings and interpretations take us back into the archives of world history. From names we learn about their occupations, environment, and geographical locations. Some are idealized heroes and their names are words of praise for their merits. American people adopt or are given names describing their attributes, such as beauty, their bravery, strength, or their hope. Their names are often related to their religious beliefs.
Many names used in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries or in A.D 100 are seldom heard today. Biblical names are the exceptions. In the past one hundred years Americans, as well as the people from other countries of the world, have borrowed names profusely from the Bible, and in Space Age of the future they will continue to widen their horizons for names to be used by the generations to come.
