If I had to choose a single explanation for why Rome fell, which one do I find the most convincing? I find the most convincing reason why Roman collapse was because of economic problem. On page 137 in our text book “The Story of Western Culture” it states there are also historians who emphasize economic reason for the Rome’s collapse such as stagnation in trade that led to less wealth. There was also low productivity of the end of the Roman Empire for various reasons, along with a society of gold and silver. Less economic activity means less wealth. When dire economic conditions prevail, you can’t pay the army: and if you can’t pay the army, then it’s not going to fight to defend Rome. (Michael A.Babcock,PH.D).
Rome depended on its empire for money like farming practices and mining. When the problems accrued, it became very poor and had trouble surving economically. Rome had nothing to trade, so it was very difficult for them to rebuild itself. If you are going to have a war, it’s going to take money to be successful. This also became a problem for Rome because other cities within the Empire stopped sending money.
Conclusion, the reason Economic was the most convincing to me is because, our Economic problems we are having today. In some sense history is repeating itself. Like most Roman Christian they put their faith in God. This gave them the strength to make it through these tough times. As a Christian faith is a spiritual force. I believe today is a time we all need to have faith in God as the Roman Christian did in their tough times. (Mark 11:23).
