The Diary of Anne Drank

“Hope in reality is the worst of all evils, because it prolongs the torments of man.” The play, The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett is an adaptation to the book The Diary of Anne Frank. The play takes place during the holocaust in Netherlands. Anne Frank and her family are Jews and are forced to take hiding in an annex, which is located in her father’s store. The Frank family allows four other Jews to hide in the Annex along with them. They were there for two years until the Nazi’s found them and sent them to concentration camps. All the members of the annex died, except for Anne’s father, Otto Frank. In the play The Diary of Anne Frank the authors illustrate the theme that hope doesn’t last forever through the use of characterization, foreshadowing, and setting.
The author used characterization to present the theme. “Sometimes I wish the end would come… whatever it is”—Margot Frank (p.263). Margot is a quiet and respectful girl, but she spoke out and came out of her shell. She has lost all hope and wants it to all be over with because she is tired of hoping and waiting. I admire Margot for speaking out because I wouldn’t have the courage to do so. “We’re young, Margot and Peter and I! You grown-ups have had your chance! But look at us… If we begin thinking of all the horror in the world, were lost! Were trying to hold on to some kind of ideals… when everything… ideals, hopes… everything is being destroyed!”—Anne Frank (p.263). Anne is angry and scared because she feels as if she wont have the chance to grow up and have the opportunities’ her parents had. If I were in Anne’s position I would feel exactly the same because its scary feeling as if you will never grow up.   Basically all of them feel as if all hope is lost and they feel as everything is destroyed.
As well as using characterization for a theme the author used foreshadowing. “Thanks to this clumsy fool, there’s someone now who knows we’re up...
