Realism vs. Anti-Realism
At first, I choose not to take a stand between these two ethnical positions. It is for the reason that the positions both have arguments I can’t simply brush under the rug. While anti-realists are right when they say rightness and wrongness cannot always be decided categorically, on the other hand, realists talks about matters of practicality. Judging by what I only have I am more partial to realism because I think ethics exist for practical reasons and goals rather than uncertainties.
The Road to Goodness
I share the belief of the philosophers who think the only source of evil is ignorance. This leads me to also believe intelligence is the most important factor to develop one’s moral behavior. It is the key to reach one’s true potential. Potential that will lead him to excellence, followed by success and so as happiness and contentment. Naturally, happy and contented people are the least to do evil. However, this is only half of the cake. The other half is the use of the acquired intelligence as a tool to learn every fact that is relevant to his existence –mind empowerment! To use intelligence as power to dare think, to dare ask. It is the ability to entertain any kind and form of knowledge without readily believing it. And to eventually carry out the responsibilities that go along with such power. When this wholeness is achieved that man’s good acts will be his happiness.
Duty
Duty should be executed in the sense that it is of moral responsibility. It functions in a way that freedom is not depraved from a person. However, if cases occur such that the doer is aware that immoral means are ought to be done in line of duty, his act cannot be justified by saying he is just being dutiful. For being dutiful or being not is still a conscious choice for him to make.
