Intro
What does Hollywood have to do to turn a short story into a box office hit? The director Tim Burton found that if he built on the short story by Washington Irving called, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," he would have a box office thriller. Tim Burton used the story as his foundation; however, he quickly found that many aspects would need to be changed in order to make a two hour movie. The movie version carries over many of the same characters; however, the plot and ending are quite different. Even though many of the same characters are used in both versions their roles in the story were changed when the movie was made. The movie takes a much more detailed look at the identity of the Headless Horseman, but the story looks much more closely at one of the main characters, Ichabod Crane. The movie does not spend much time focusing on the relationship between Ichabod Crane and another main character, Katrina Van Tassel; however, this is the main theme in the short story.   There are many similarities and differences between the movie, directed by Tim Burton and the original," The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving.

One similarity in both versions of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” is the main character Ichabod Crane; however, each version portrays him in a different light. In the movie Ichabod is shown as young constable who ruffles the feathers of his co-workers by questioning their methods (of investigation- or punishment).   In order to get him out of the way his superior sends him to a village called Sleepy Hollow to investigate the slayings of the town people. When Ichabod arrives in the town he is met with some hostility and   skepticism, which he only makes   worse by being nervous around the horse he is given.   In Irving’s short story Ichabod Crane is an educated school and music teacher. Unlike the movie most of the town people enjoy being around Ichabod and believe he is doing a good job with the students. When he isn’t...
