In the story The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe who introduces the main character, Montresor, who is going to get revenge. Montresor goes out during the carnival to look for fortunate then takes him to the catacombs by telling him he has amontillado there. When they are in the catacombs Montresor takes fortunate the he traps him. Montresor shows that he is smart through his actions and his words.                                                       Montresor shows that he is smart when he gets amontillado and puts it in the catacombs. This shows that Montresor is smart because he knows that Fortunato likes wine so he gets the wine as bait so he will surely go. It also shows that he is smart because someone else would not have known what to do. Someone else wouldn’t have pretended to care like Montresor did when Fortunato said that he was sick so Montresor pretended to care about him. Montresor shows that he is dishonest when he says “we will go back your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, and beloved; you are happy, as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back; you will be ill.” This shows that Montresor is dishonest because he doesn’t care about Fortunato he just said that make Fortunato think that he cared about him. In conclusion Montresor is a smart and dishonest man. Fortunato shows that he is a smart when he uses the amontillado as bait to bring Fortunato into the catacombs. He shows that he is a dishonest man he tells Fortunato that they shall go back because he is worried about his cough. Montresor also shows that he is smart when he chooses that his plan shall take place during carnival because everyone is wearing costumes so no one will know who Fortunato left with last.
