The Atomic Bomb

The War in Germany was over, and fighting continued only throughout the Pacific Islands, where American troops were island hopping in an effort to finally vanquish the Japanese. The Japanese were using the same tactics they have for hundreds of years, don’t cease fighting until they won or to the death. The United States, tired of the war and violence, issued the Potsdam Declaration, which outlined the consequences that Japan should face if they refuse to surrender, which was ignored. So, in August of 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost, though Japan did ultimately surrender. This was a large decision on President Harry S. Truman’s part. President Truman’s decision to use the atom bomb on Japan was justified.
The development process of nuclear weapons in the United States was named The Manhattan Project. This was the first project that included the development of nuclear weapons. Locations throughout the United States were used to develop and build nuclear devices. Parts of the development team were escaped scientists from Europe, including Albert Einstein. The trinity test was deployed on July 16 1945, the tests purpose was to see the effects and destructive power of the atomic bomb, and its location was near in New Mexico. After the United States had seen the destructive power of their weapon, President Harry Truman first warned Japan to surrender immediately, but there was no response since. At this point, the United States was tired of fighting and wanted to end the war. The atomic bomb was necessary in order to assure the war would end as soon as possible. On August 6th the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, on august 9th a second one was dropped on Nagasaki, and on August 10th Japan declared its intention to surrender.
