Discussion point: The ends justify the means. Do you agree?
Option 1 - agreement:
Actually I fully agree with the saying no matter how cruel it may seem. The history of the humankind clearly shows that no progress or development would be possible if one cared about the means to achieve their goals so much. The most precious values of our time such as Christianity, democracy, technical progress, equality and liberty all demanded sacrifice and wouldn’t have been achieved if nobody had died for them. We would still be pagans living in caves and hunting for game. So yes, I believe the noble goal justifies the means that are necessary to achieve it.
Option 2 - disagreement:
To tell the truth I can’t agree with the statement. It’s kind of position of a very egoistic, cruel and ambitious person who stops at nothing to achieve his/her goal. I admit that the history has not always been humane and just to certain groups of people and single individuals but I think we have already created the environment in which one has the opportunity to choose from different options to reach his/her aim. With today’s democracy, diplomacy and publicity every ambition can be achieved in a peaceful way, though certainly it may take longer. So I believe this statement can not be applied to our modern life: the means are of no less importance than the goal.
Option 3 – no particular opinion:
1) don’t feel embarrassed to ask for the explanation of any unknown words in the statement
I didn’t really understand the meaning of the word ‘justify’ in the statement. What does it mean?
2) agree or disagree with the previous speaker’s point of view and RETELL it
Being mostly a pacifist I fully agree with the above said, I also think that with today’s democracy, diplomacy and publicity every ambition can be achieved in a peaceful way, though certainly it may take longer.
3) say that you’ve got no opinion on the problem, give a motive for that
Frankly speaking, I’ve never thought about this...
