Should Guns be Outlawed in the United States
The question of whether or not guns should be outlawed in the United States is frequently a topic of hot debate. Recent instances of multiple homicides again bring this issue to the forefront.   Many people believe that outlawing guns will reduce deaths and make the United States a safer place.   Others believe that outlawing guns will not reduce deaths and will decrease safety in the United States.   This paper will consider both the key pro and con arguments in the gun debate.
Many people would agree that if guns were outlawed there would be fewer murders. According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms there are about 200 million guns here in the United States. Every year that large number is rapidly growing by four to five million. Of that number there are about 65 million legal gun owners of one or more guns. Many families own one or more firearms for protection, hunting, collecting, or target shooting.   Within the past few years there have been nearly 35,000 people annually killed by guns. 15,000 have been murders, 18,000 suicides, and about 1,500 have been accidental. Because of these statistics many people want guns outlawed or banned altogether.   “A 2003 study published by the Brookings Institution, found homicides “continued a modest decline” since 1997. They concluded that the impact of the National Firearms Agreement was “relatively small,” with the daily rate of firearms homicides declining 3.2%.”   From 2009 to 2011, overall homicides declined slightly according to a 2011 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report, with a corresponding drop in homicides by firearms.(www.theblaze.com) Although the saying “guns do not kill people, people kill people” is true, if those guns were not around those people would be alive.
