Across his poetry, Zephaniah reveals that the black community where suffering from a lack of justice and equality, they were forced to live their lives in fear. In his poems Zephaniah uses the interaction of characters to illustrate the negative effects of injustice for the black community. This is particularly demonstrated through his description when he says that white people have done nothing but inflict pain. Also, it is clear that white people thought that they were superior and in control other everybody else.
Chant of a homesick nigga is a detailed representation of the hatred and oppression of white people towards the black people. Indeed the white people used their racial authority to feed their perverse desires by discriminating and torturing the black people. On one hand Zephaniah clearly states, ‘But I can’t bear being abused’ this line is declarative and a really strong statement, it shows his rebellion against the white tyranny and it also signifies that he was being physically hurt. On the other hand, Zephaniah mentions previously in the poem that ‘all my ribs are bare and bruised’ this line undoubtedly portrays the corporal injuries perpetrated by the whites. In fact, we can picture the scene in which the black people were being physically abused. Besides by being physically abused, they were also verbally insulted ‘You call me nigga, scum and wog’ this line implies that the white people deliberately used vulgar language to implement their racial supremacy.
Similarly, Zephaniah applies the same points in Three Black Males where injustice and discrimination takes place, ‘For we have no human rights’ this shows, that the black people were not recognized as human beings and that all their rights weren’t being put into action. The black people were only accepted when they did something beneficial for a white country ‘When we win them gold in sports’ this illustrates that the black people were being used by the whites and that winning gold for them...
