Part 1: Living in a diverse world

1. What is meant by diversity?

It means understanding that each person is unique, and recognising our individual differences.   Such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs or political beliefs.   It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the
rich dimensions of diversity contained within each person.


2. Describe the community you live in.   Highlight some of the variations you may observe in terms of:
• Interests
• Beliefs
• Ages
• Lifestyles
• Personal, social and cultural identities.


I live in a large town which is made up of all different ages and many different ethnic groups. Redditch is split up into different parishes and some are known as the “posh part” and some are known as the “rough area”. There are many young families in these so called “rough areas” as many of these areas are owned by the council and house the young families in the council homes.   We have a local hospital.
