In this system, the king or feudal lord provides land, weapons, and a share of treasure to his warriors in return for their support of the leader in battle. In the case of Beowulf Hrothgar accepted Beowulf’s offer to defeat the monster, Grendel that was terrorizing he and his people. Treasure is not only a tradition of thanks in that time but was something that was expected if someone came and did a favor for you.
