ABSTRACT
Social networking sites like the Facebook, Twitter and Google+ have attracted millions of users during the previous years. One of the most widely used social networks, Facebook offered its biggest Initial Public Offering (IPO) IN 2012, with market capitalization over a $104 billion. It was termed as the "cultural touchstone". These platforms have also attracted millions of users worldwide, future possible customers and market fields too. Thus, opening doors for increased misuse of the world wide web, network abuse, misogynists, malicious users and poisoned vulnerability. Our report will evaluate the implications of women in Chennai being harassed online, how safe is the web for women of chennai. To do so, we have studied cases and interviewed the local crowd of Chennai, and looked up for cases been filed regarding online harassment. As a result,we will provide a set of countermeasures to increase awareness of the users, especially women.
INTRODUCTION .
In recent years, online social networks   have become global mass phenomenon and one of the most fast emerging e-services according to Gross and Acquisti (2005) and Boyd and Ellison (2007). Statistics show there are about 1.28 billion monthly active users as of March 31, 2014. And about 1 billion mobile monthly active users. Therefore, Facebook is one of the largest online social networks. “Founded in 2004, Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share and make the world open and connected. People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to the users.” Futhermore, companies and organisations consider social network sites the medium of choice for large-scale marketing and target oriented advertising campaigns.
