Explain the factors that the manager should consider when designing backup procedures for the system

Backup and recovery procedures should be put in place to help prevent the loss of data.

The type of backup put in place, such as full and incremental, should be considered for the design of the backup procedures. It would be recommended for the manager to perform a full back up at the end of every week; this allows the data to be saved and easily recovered if a disaster were to occur and is also a quick method of restoration. The manager should perform an incremental backup every night, this enables all data that is changed to be backed up since the last full. This takes up less storage space and therefore less time to complete.

Backups should be performed frequently to ensure all data is accounted for before data loss occurs. Ideally the online bookshop manager should perform a backup every night or when processing power is at its lowest, so the backup process is as quick and as trouble free as possible.

The manager should consider the backup medium used for saving the data onto. For example; magnetic tape could be used for the full backups due to its cheap price and high storage capacity, there will be no fear that some data will not save. The manager should consider having an online backup storage; this would be useful in case the physical copy of the backup is lost or corrupt. This leads on to location of backup…

Backed up data should be stored in three major locations: onsite, offsite and online. An onsite copy will be required for a swift recovery of data in the possibility that a user deletes a file. This data would be kept in a fireproof safe for physical security purposes. An offsite copy will be required to assure recovery of backup can be performed in the event of a natural disaster, fire or power failure. And finally an online copy would be required in the off chance that both the onsite and offsite backup copies are lost.
