Stella Gutierrez 12-10-10 AP English Period 7 Mr. Agundez Arizona Immigration Law SB 1070

Laws have been around our country for many years, some directly affect citizens and some do not necessarily affect all citizens. Each state in the United States of America has the right to create its own law. Recently, Arizona has used its right and created a new law that affects many individuals who reside in Arizona. On April 23, 2010, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed SB 1070 into a law. Now as of July 29, 2010, this law requires state officials and agencies to obey and assist with enforcement of the federal immigration laws to detain and investigate citizens whom may “look” illegal. So the question is, who “looks” like an undocumented immigrant? The Law in Arizona has become extremely popular in the state as well as all of United States it has also raised much controversy over Arizona. “It is by the fortune of God that, in this country, we have three benefits: freedom of speech, freedom of thought, and the wisdom never to use either.”—Mark Twain. Many people throughout Arizona are dealing with misfortune over the SB-1070 law that passed on July 29 2010. With a multiple number of individuals saying it will eventually hurt Arizona and lead to racial profiling. One girl named Amy Deleon from Mesa’s Alma Elementary School was so disturbed she called the state lawmakers of Gov. Jan Brewer

to protest her opinion as a citizen. Deleon left a message saying she was not in favor of that law. She also said, “I’m a U.S citizen and I feel I might be threatened.” Along with Amy’s protest she began creating signs at home that read, “All men are created equal,” “We are happy when we are united,” and “The new law is such a flaw.” This opened the eyes of many individuals, because not only did a young girl call lawmakers, but she also voiced her opinion in other way that influenced others to speak out.
