In the article by Adre Joao Antonil, he begins by talking about the different weaknesses and strengths of the slaves. He mentions how when the slaves arrive to Brazil, to sort them, based off where they are from, which could be of Ardas, Minas, Congo. He describes that some are stronger, some are weaker, some are rude and others learn to adapt. Most of the authors basis for this is where they come from.He also mentioned that a slave that was born in to slavery, is better than 4 slaves off of the ship. The author argues that the slaves should have adequate medicine, clothing, and food. I know from history that this was definitely not always the case. The author also mentions the 3 P’s, which are Pao, Pao, and Pano, which are a bread, a stick, and a piece of cloth. Stick, for punishment, and bread and clothes to prove to God that the slave deserved the punishment. He says that the animals are often treated better than the slaves were. Overall, this article really is trying to say that slave owners should treat their slaves well, but even ‘well’ does not seem good enough in my opinion.
In the second article, by L. F Tollenara, was honestly on a whole separate level of cruelty and disrespect for the slaves. In the first sentence, he says “I am not speaking of the slaves, who are nothing but cattle” (Tollenara, 44). He sees the slaves as not even human, but as animals. He divides people into groups, (1) which are the owners of sugar mills, the “great landowners”, (2) the lavradores, and (3) the moradores.   He says of black women, that they were pretty if their necks were longer, and goes on to pick them apart by every flaw in their body. Both articles show the slaves as being less than human, the second article was by far worse than the first one. The second article completely demeans these people, when the first seems relatively less disrespectful in comparison.
