The Idea

The short story is called ‘the idea’ and the author is Raymond Carver.
Voyeurism is happening every day and can be a negative thing that some people are attached to like some kind of hobby. Everybody can be stalked, as another name for it, and everybody can stalk. Voyeurism is a known word, and all people is involved.   This text takes a new perspective on voyeurism and shows us a couple, which does not really have an ordinary hobby.
The couple is trapped in their neighbor’s game, and happens to stalk them, without they are realizing what they are doing. In this essay I will make an analyses and interpretation of the short story, and focus on how voyeurism affects the couple in the text.  

In the text, we are following a woman in her marriage, She is the narrator, so we sees her perspective and has her view on her husband, which is important to remember when you are going to characterize him. The couple is probably trapped in their own sick fantasy, where they are spying at their neighbor’s sex game. The ironic in this short story is, that the neighbor’s game is about the husband spying at his wife.
The husbands name is Vern and he is smoking all day long. He is a little bit reserved against his wife, and does not really get her a lot of attention. The only thing they share with each other is, when they are watching their neighbor’s sex game. The narrator tells us, that Vern is embarrassed about the situation and about watching them - Vern's a little embarrassed about watching. (P.1, l.12) Vern seems like a calm man, without any problems or concerns about his wife. The neighbor wife captivates him, and every time he sees her undress he says “By God”.   When Vern is concentrating he rolls his tongue in his mouth and narrows his eyes. He is snoring in his sleep. Next to his bed, he has an ashtray because he wakes up in the middle of the night for a smoke. He is dominating the narrator (his wife) in such way, that she seems to do everything to make...
