Sport England

Role of National Government

There is a department responsible for policy and funding for all sport, physical recreation and active leisure. They support performers with all sorts of abilities and ensure there is equal provision for all. The main objectives in 1972 by the English Sports Council were to: increase participation, raise standards of performance, increase the quantity and quality of sports facilities and to act as an information centre. In 1996 they transformed into UK sport and they aimed to: support winning athletes, stage high quality events, promote fair play and to represent the UK on the international stage.

Sport Englands Role

Sport Englands objectives are now: "To advise, invest in and promote community sport to create an active nation". It focuses to improve the amount of active participation in activities ranging from gym and even skateboarding. Sport England promote advise and investing in: facilities, coaching and officiating and the grass roots. Sport England has a strong partnership with the youth sports trust (YST) and UK sport. They all work together to improve participation and skills, YST is responsible for improving school sport, Sport England is responsible for participation at the grass roots level while UK sport is responsible for the more elite athletes.

Funding

There are two sources for Sport England's funding: the Government and the National Lottery. Between 1994 and 2006 Sport England received 550 million pounds worth of government funding. Since the National Lottery 2.2 billion pounds has been reinvested into sport. Sport England also work with several other bodies for example: Women's Sports Foundation and English cricket board. Some of these funds have gone into large projects like Wembley Stadium, a large amount has also gone towards the juniors to provide them with quality facilities and strong coaching to help them to take an interest in the sport.
