Campaign on World No Tobacco Day 2012
A press conference was held on World No Tobacco Day 2012 at Mangalore Press Club. Mr. Vishnu Sharma, from A. J. Hospital was present during press conference. May 31st is globally observed as World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) around the world. It was first created by member states of World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1987. On this day, a 24 – hour abstinence from tobacco and all its products is encouraged throughout the world. He announced the Theme of World No Tobacco Day 2012 is “Tobacco Industry Interference”. He also mentioned that it is important to understand functioning of Tobacco Industry in order to successfully implement control policies. He announced that Anti – Tobacco Campaign will be conducted in A. J. Hospital, Mangalore. He also brought into light that this year’s Campaign will focus on the massive interference those policy makers and the Anti – Tobacco Lobby face from Tobacco Industry. He also mentioned by implementing control measures in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), governments reduce the heavy burden of disease and death that is attributable to tobacco use or exposure. He also mentioned that Nicotine Replacement Therapy, which is a good way to manage nicotine dependence. It involves administering nicotine, (without the other harmful products in the tobacco) in the form of patches, chewing gum, inhaler, nasal spray or lozenges. He also mentioned about Counselling and Support Groups, which will help many to quit tobacco. He also mentioned that classes on various other control measures will also be conducted during Campaign.
