This assignment is to discuss myself, my setting and my role and responsibilities.

At present I work within our Foundation setting. I am the only qualified key worker and in Raelin terms position have the “Leader” cable etal (2010: p7). We provide a provision for children aged 3-5 and education to children of the armed forces.   We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and support it with the High Scope Framework.   (Weikart d etal 1995 High/Scope press : p13-14).

The Early Years Foundation Stage is the key frame work to our setting.   As a parent back in 2000, when   the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage was published, followed by Birth to Three Matters in 2003, I felt they both provided support and knowledge of what was expected of Early Years settings.   After studying the EYFS and its back ground and the reasons why it was produced it is clear that changes to the education system in England were necessary.   To produce the Early Years Foundation Stage, England looked towards America, New Zealand and Italy for examples of excellence in early education as they seemed to have achieved their goals in Early Years education, the philosophies of High Scope (Hohmann et al, 1995), Montessori (1912) Te Whariki (1996) and Reggio Emilia (Edwards et al, 1998; Rinaldi, 2006). However the Early Years Foundation Stage had no specific approach although it could be argued that Reggio slots in really well.(Cable 2010: p84-86) (DVD block 1)

In our setting parents and the community are used daily to support our children.   We have parent helpers and stay and play mornings for the children to access with parents. Parents have full access to planning.   We draw on our community to share their experiences and roles. We invite them into our environment like as seen in the Reggio settings.   (Cable 2010: p84)
