‘Divorce is wrong’ – Essay Question

In recent years, marital rate has increased but in contrast, so has the divorce rates. Some people oppose the idea of divorce as it is believed that all differences could be solved in order to maintain family stability. In the Christian belief, it is taught that divorces are wrong because what God joined together should not be separated by man. This is stated in the bibles where it says in Mark 10: 8-9 ‘the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one. Therefore what God has put together, let man not separate’. It is perceived that getting a divorce that is tearing God’s creation apart and sinning because if they were to sleep with another partner it would be considered as adultery.
However, people would argue that everyone should have the rights to get a divorce. This could be for a number of reasons such as they could have cohered into a marriage that they didn’t know what they were doing, the spouse could have committed adultery or unreasonable behaviour or they are simply just unhappy with their marriage should just be grated a divorce. The Orthodox Church is the only church that will grant divorce under these circumstances. In these cases, divorces would not be perceived as wrong.
In my opinion, I do not think that couples should be divorced as they had made a commitment to God and a promise. The church also offers free couples counselling from the priest which could be a healthy and successful option instead of turning to divorce straightaway. However I do think certain situation divorce should definitely be granted should as an abusive relationship etc. but I do still think each individuals has the rights to get out of an unwanted marriage.
