Yes, the enforcement of school uniform is indoctrination. This can be good and bad, as children don’t like being told what to do but they can benefit from it in the long run.

There is a belief that if student wear uniform in schools they may behave better, because they all look the same. This is partly true as the students that behave well are generally seen to be wearing correct uniform. Whereas pupils who misbehave are usually found not to be wearing correct uniform. Maybe they are rebellious and therefore wear the uniform in the wrong way to be disobedient and troublesome to teachers.

Another theory to do with school uniform is that there would be more bullying if it wasn’t compulsory to wear it. This may well be true as some students are less fortunate than others and cannot afford all the latest makes and trends. Consequently the COOL people could start to bully them and think of them as ‘sad’. Having school uniform does not necessarily stop bullying and grouping of like people i.e. townies, surfers and intelligent students, but it does help reduce it.

Many teachers believe that compulsory school uniform is a good idea because it means that they can identify which people are with their specific school when they are on trips. Having to wear a tie with a certain colour on it makes it easier for teachers and supervisors to see which house the pupil they are dealing with is in (if the colour of the tie is related to houses). Therefore making it a lot easier for them to deal with the individual by going straight to the head of house.

School uniform makes everyone look the same. This belief is definitely true as everyone is wearing the same thing this can be good and bad. This collectiveness is good as it does reduce bulling as I have commented on above, but it is also bad because it hides our individualism.
