Oprah Winfrey Sells Fictional Self Help to Her Viewers



Oprah Winfrey has a very loud and authoritative voice when she is addressing someone who is criticizing her. As the producer I would tell her use a strong tone to respond to an article like this. Oprah needs to tell these people that these books inspire and help her. The best example that Oprah can use is herself. Harpo is a fortune five hundred company. Any woman that can start her own empire surely doesn’t need self help, but if she feels that it can help her with her own self esteem than it can help other people too. Oprah needs to tell these critics that they need to sign up for the book club. Maybe reading a few of the books will help them realize that you don’t have to use all of the advice that they write in those books but some of it is very useful.

I absolutely disagree that self help books are harmful for the women that read them. Some women and even men for that matter need to find reassurance in themselves. Self help books are a way for people open up and live their lives differently then they’ve done in the past. Some people don’t even know that there are different ways to go about solving their problems. Many of these books give the reader different avenues to use. I caught an episode of the show wife swap the other night. The show is about two families that swap wives for a week. In the episode I saw two families that were completely opposite. One family had a home in a very rural area. They had a goat, nine dogs, horses and many other animals running around their house and in their house. The house was very dirty and no one seemed to do anything. They liked to have fun but hated to clean. The other family lived in a suburban neighborhood with a big house. Every Saturday all of the kids and the mom would wake up and clean until the house was spotless. The two mothers were from different ends of the earth as far as priorities go. The mom who lived with all of the animals...
