Mattimeo is a continuation of the story of Redwall. It is set two years after the attack on Redwall Abby by Cluny the Scurge. A new villian, Slagar the Cruel, is in the area. Slagar whose former name is Chickenhound, Son of Sela the healer, is a slaver and has a score to settle with Redwall. During the Cluny war he was a double agent selling secrets to both sides. When Cluny discovered he had betrayed him he stabbed Chickenhound. The Redwaller's gave him refuge and

healed him. But the fox's greed took him over and he stole all their values, killing a brother

(monk) in the process. The Redwaller's chased him into the forest where he was bitten by an

adder. He used all his healing ability's he had learned from his mother to return himself to health.

But the poison left him horribly disfigured. After that he adorned a checkered mask to hide his

face and the name Slager the Cruel. He swore revenge on all of Redwall for what they did to

him.   He sneaks into the abbey and kidnaps the children Mattimeo, Sam, Tim, Tess and Cynthia. They are taking the Redwallers and other young ones including the badger child Auma, who her father Orlando the Axe is trying to save south. Matthias, Basil and Jess Squirrel go out to save the Redwallers and meet Cheek the Otter and Orlando the Axe on the way. The friends uncover Slagar’s sinister plot to sell the young ones to Malkariss, an evil ruler who has built his kingdom from the underground remnants of old Loamhedge Abbey. Meanwhile, back at Redwall, General Ironbeak the raven warlord from the north is trying to take over the abbey. He has the creatures backed into Cavern Hole, but tunnels dug by the moles help them to get around. In the end Constance the badger mother and Styrk Redkite the great eagle save the day. Matthias and friends meanwhile do several things. They find the young ones, kill Malkariss, enlist a slave army and defeat the evil rat horde.
