The book Jacob Have I Loved by Katherine Paterson focuses on a girl named Sara Louise Bradshaw who is tired of being compared to her twin sister. But what the book tries to convey to the reader throughout the story is that it really doesn’t matter. That is why it’s easy to identify with.
Every time we say we want to be like someone else, we’re told to be ourselves. But honestly the more I hear it the more frustrated I get. Saying that is just a little cliché now and we hear it so much that now it has no real meaning.
I personally already know to be myself. So what if I want some shirt or any item that someone else has? That doesn’t mean that I’m going to go off and start acting like them. We are all our own person, and no matter what we will still be that person at the end of the day.
But now we have to convince everyone else to act the same way. There are some people that don’t know what they want out of life but it’s the little things that we do want that can lead us to the bigger picture. Sara in the book goes on a ‘journey’ of sorts to find a way that she can be special. To find a way that she can be better, and figure out who she is. Also to find a way to out shine her sister. But in reality she doesn’t need to find a way out find a way to shine, and she shouldn’t have to. She should just do what she wants and not bother listening to what other people say, because the only thing that matters is what you think of yourself and how you think you should be.
