SUGGESTED MEMORANDUM

1.1 Shakespeare’s popularity begins when children meet him in
the classroom and they continue to appreciate him as adults / show
their appreciation of his work by buying his books. (2)

1.2 Tourists are able to visit the home of William and Anne
Shakespeare, eat food at the local Café of Love and purchase
souvenirs – any two (2)

1.3 Basic meaning: 700 000 tourists are ‘imported’ and they spend $300 million. Souvenirs and the Shakespearean plays are ‘exports’ which carry reflect   British articles of trade and British values. (3)

1.4 The word ‘guy’ is informal; the rest of the sentence is formal. The combination of the two registers is entertaining and appeals to the wider audience who regard him as a popular figure rather than one to be worshipped. (3)

1.5 Shakespeare is regarded as a ‘poet-god’ by some people – one who is above criticism / can do no wrong / whom people worship. (Reference to ‘bard’ and idolatry combination necessary for full marks.) (3)

written the plays / at the top of the list of possibilities. (2)
