Pidgin In Hawaii
Ho brah howz it? That is a small example of the pidgin spoken here on Maui. I think that pidgin is an important thing to learn if anyone plans on living here in Hawaii, because those who don’t understand it miss out on conversations and wouldn’t be able to experience this part of the Hawaii life style. Pidgin is a very effective and amusing way to communicate because I am able to say things quicker and more straight to the point.There are a lot of different people who use pidgin every day and is a very popular jargon used in Hawaii which I hear all the time.
Pidgin is a language that is comprised of made up words, shorter versions of real words, bad grammar and words that has more than one meaning. For example, the word "Dakine" doesn’t really have a meaning but can be used to describe many things. Here is one way you can use it "Ay, where dakine stay?". Most the time I find it hard to figure out what the meaning is but sometimes I might understand. Pidgin was influenced by many languages including Portuguese, Hawaiian, and Cantonese. It was originally created so that the immigrants, the Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese and Filipinos as well as the Hawaiians and the Americans could do business and effectively communicate with each other which later evolved into the language that is used in Hawaii today.
Pidgin has been around for a while now and it has grown quite a bit since it was first created. It started around the 19th century. I have been using pidgin since I was able to talk. My dad was a big pidgin talker so he would speak to me in pidgin and I just picked it up. I usually don’t speak pidgin unless im joking around with friends or with people who are speaking pidgin to me. Pidgin also has certain times it should be spoken and shouldn’t be used when having a serious conversation. A situation that is inappropriate for pidgin is when getting interviewed for a job because it could ruin chances of being hired. It was because of my dads...
