Kindred Octavia E.Butler
In the book Kindred,Dana is suddenly transported to the past to help, save and protect one of her ancestors,Rufus.Everytime Rufus is in trouble Dana appears and saves him and the only way to get back is if she is in a near death situation or is in terrible danger.Dana is scared that if she does not save him then she will never get back. The relationship between Rufus and Dana changes from respectful to hurtful over the course of the novel because Alice kills herself.
The relationship between Rufus and Dana is respectful.Rufus and Dana are talking, she is telling him not to play with fire and not to call her a nigger even if his mother calls her that.
"your mother always call black people niggers Rufe?"sure except when she has company why not?"his air of innocent questioning confused me eitheir he really didn't know what he was saying or he had a career waiting in hollywood whichever it was he wasn't going to go on saying it to me im a black woman if you have to call me,anything, that's it pg(26)".
This shows that Rufus and Dana's relationship is respectful because Dana could tell Rufus not to do something or not to call her a nigger and he would listen.

"I brought you down here to write a few letters for me not fight with me"."letters?....."you didnt hate it six years ago"I didn't have to do it then.I didn't have eight or nine people all wanting answers and wanting them now....you'll never know how hard I worked in my own time to avoid doing jobs like this....yes I do Kevin told me he told me about the books you wrote too your own books".(pg226)
This shows that Rufus and Dana's relationship is respectful because Rufus is giving and allowing Dana to write stuff down on paper for her own value but...
