Introduction: Natural Hazards and Disasters
Something that I learned in this chapter that I did not know before was the topic of mitigating hazards. I found this part of the chapter quite interesting because it addressed the question of how there are some institutions already set into place to help people overcome certain concerns one may have if a natural disaster were to occur. The idea of land-use planning, is a simple measure that can easily be applied to hazardous areas. The opposition of this life saving precaution can be seen when people have the desire to gain instead of lose the value of land but whatever the circumstance is, there are different objectives to both sides of this idea.
After reading this chapter I thought land-use planning is a concept that should not be overlooked because safety should be a person’s first interest. I do not believe that it is right how some people choose to overlook how important this idea can be of such importance. It is one’s safety that everyone should be concerned about and by carrying out land-use planning it allows people to be safe.
Plate Tectonics and Physical Hazards
In this chapter I learned about what the earth is made out of and how it creates physical hazards that may cause a natural disaster. I learned about the three types of boundaries but I had the most interest for transform boundaries because it relates to me the most and because of that, it would be the topic that I was most interested in learning more about. I learned that when two plates slide past each other without pulling apart or colliding is what makes a transform boundary. I also learned that oceanic transform faults cause earthquakes, but since it is in the ocean there aren’t any casualties but that it is quite the opposite when it involves continents. An example can be the San Andreas Fault. I felt most connected to this section because this boundary is relevant to where I live. And by understanding how the transform boundary works I...
