The huge burning drilling hole in Karakum desert– nicknamed the "the door to hell" –attracts more and more travelers and becomes a new tourist site. This drilling hole is located near Derweze county, 270 kilometers north of Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan.

Soviet geologists were drilling at the site in 1971 and tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas. But the ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a hole with a diameter of 70 meters. Soviet geologists decided to light the crater on fire to burn off its poisonous methane gas to prevent villager from the poisonous gases. It was hoped that the fire would use all the fuel within days, but things didn't go as planned. The fire still burns today.


The door to hell attracts 1200 to 15000 tourists from more than 50 countries pushes Turkish government willing to create an attractive image of Turkmenistan as a tourism destination.



“The burning crater is attracting more and more visitors every year, especially foreign tourists. The ‘lifeless’ desert could soon become a hugely interesting destination for different types of tourism -- from eco-tourism to extreme sports. ” an official on Turkmenistan’s state committee on tourism was quoted as saying by AFP.

Some travelers are willing to stand by the fenceless edge of the hole, where the temperature is more than 50 degree centigrade. Meanwhile, Derweze claim that “nothing that falls in the crater makes it out alive.” It has the possibility of collapse, so visitors are advised to pay much attention and be extra careful.
