Roosevelt’s Campaign speech
Democrats, Republicans, my fellow Americans
The greatest injustice of our time is this depression. The noblest of plights is that of an honest, hardworking man. I believe that once our great nation has weathered the storm; it will be stronger and more prosperous than ever. I offer no quick and easy escape from our dire situation. However I can offer you a ‘New Deal’. This New Deal is revolutionary in its approach towards the problems faced today. Ones such as rapidly growing unemployment, the relief schemes being cut or running out, the collapse of prices of crops and goods alike and issues such as the ‘bonus army’.
Throughout my life I have been very lucky, being born to a privileged family, I attended private school and studied at Harvard University, to be a lawyer. I entered politics 22 years ago, where I was elected to be senator of New York. 3 years later I was selected to be on Ex-President Woodrow Wilson’s cabinet. After which I developed polio, this meant I could no longer continue my position as senator. However I then went on to recover from my affliction, and was elected as the Governor of New York.
In my new position as Governor of New York, I first devised the ‘New Deal’. I saw the need for action; this led me to believe that the Government should take responsibility for its individuals, its economy and the citizen’s welfare. After this I set up a committee of prevention of unemployment, and persuade the government to spend $20 million on home and work relief.
The ‘New Deal’ starts with the government, if elected I shall create a vast number of jobs by setting up programmes and construction projects, not unlike the Hoover dam. Once people have these jobs they would begin to spend money and this would in turn increase the demand for new goods. Higher demand would lead to companies employing more workers.
