Assignment 1

  1. Explain how a synthetic-phonics approach, like Jolly Phonics, differs from an analytic-phonics approach, like onset and rime. (Explain give details about how and why it is…)
The analytic-phonics approach emphasis on the initial sound, e.g. the /s/ of /sun/. This rule works for short words but is problematic for longer words and encourages guessing as an initial reading strategy. The position in analytic-phonics emphasis on initial sounds, onset, rime and word families. The in analytic-phonics is slow; it can be as slow as 1 letter a week, for example. This unnecessarily delays reading progress. The spelling is tackled separately.   The analytic-phonics approach encourages guessing. The emphasis is on the initial sound, e.g. the /s/ sun. Works for short words that can be guessed but for longer words is much more difficult. The alphabet is central to analytic-phonics, it is concentrating on those 26 letters and their corresponding sounds. For example words like place, kiss and sell. All words have a /s/ phoneme but are represented by different letters. It is very difficult to understand and therefore difficult to explain to children. It is difficult for the children to learn writing and reading with analytic-phonics as there are too many exceptions to rules. The pronunciation of the sounds was often taught incorrectly in analytic-phonics approach, for example /s/ was taught as the sound /suh/, not the correct pronunciation /sssss/. Blending does not work as easily with incorrect pronunciation.

In contrast, in   synthetic-phonics,   each phoneme, each letter, each sounds are important, i.e. the /s/   the /u/ and the /n/. It emphasis on hearing and identifying the phonemes in all positions. The speed of learning is fast, the kids learn 8 sounds over 2 weeks, getting the children ready for reading straight away. The spelling is taught that the alphabetic code is reversible, if you can read a word you can spell it. It does not need guessing for...
