The Truth About Censorship "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." --The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America Censorship. It has been around since the Fifties, and still continues today. I may say this as if a problem in society, but along with many others, I believe censorship is violating the rights clearly stated in Amendment I of the Constitution. Free speech is something that clearly makes the U.S. different from any other country. Just think about it: In religious ceremonies, beliefs not shared by everyone in the world are presented; and on television, there is controversial material, sometimes quite offensive. There is no law saying that we cannot do this. But if you take a closer look, TV and music, just to name a few, are carefully censored. Does anyone here know of the Rolling Stones? (raising of hands from all directions) They, if you are not aware, are a very notorious band for their strong language and--well, yeah, you know where I'm going. If you have ever heard some of their more obscure material (titles not appropriate to list) then you will know that they liked to say "the F-word" and slang terms for...other stuff. I am not saying that this is suitable language for a song that people have easy access to, but it is not fair that it should be censored; remember the little paragraph at the top? Television is a main source of entertainment in America, and many people tune in each night to watch, let's say...MTV. Once on MTV, I was watching this really boring music video. I could barely hear any noise, because everything was blocked out. And that's not all. Even ABC Family needs to be censored; if you know the show "Whose Line Is It Anyway" then you will know what I'm saying. Obviously, if it is on ABC Family then they shouldn't have those words (or sometimes visions) on there in the first place! Human beings have conscience, and ours may tell us to watch a show on television. If that is our choice, then we will have already considered the material on this program. If people want to listen to this music, or watch this certain television show, they should be allowed to without the bleeps and blanks. Censorship, though having good intentions, is a violation of our rights. Just ask Dee Snider; he knows ALL about it. This essay is only for research purposes. If used, be sure to cite it properly! |
