How is a resistance to authority shown in the early stages of Measure for Measure?

There is a clear resistance to authority in Vienna and this is portrayed in Measure for Measure. An early indication is given when the reader is surprised that the Duke chooses Angelo to take the reins of Vienna in his absence rather than Escalus, who is seen as the obvious choice.
We are told that the Duke doesn’t feel in touch with his people. The reason for Esculas being the obvious choice is because he is seen as a link between the people of Vienna and the court. Angelo’s motives come into question and it is perceived that the Duke sets him up for a fall, to endear himself to the public of Vienna returning and correcting the un-rest. This will improve the perception of him and the bond between the people of Vienna and the Duke will become stronger.

We are told of tow sides of Vienna one is the court, the other is ‘down town’ Vienna where the brothels and scoundrels are found. The contrast between the two is massive, however, the resistance to authority is the same. When Mistress Overdone is told that all the brothels in Vienna are to be shut down; she panics for her welfare and income. However she is told that ‘the brothels in Vienna can be closed’ but the law cannot stop sex in the city. Sex will always be around. This shows a resistance to authority because Madame Overdone is told that she will still be able to make a living out of something that is soon to be forbidden.

Angelo soon slips up. After ordering the death of Claudio, he attempts to seduce Isabella into sleeping with him. He tries to use the girl as a bargaining chip. He claims that if she gives him her body then her brother’s life will be spared. Isabella being the committed Nun she is declines the offer. However, Angelo has shown his true colours and shows that the court is just as corrupt as the streets of Vienna. The fact of the matter is that even if Issabella had sacrificed her chastity for her...
