In response to the recent attention that nutritional supplements and their regulation have received in the media, the MegaVitamin Super-Health Corporation would like to present a few facts in defense of our industry. Dietary Supplements have well-documented history of safety and ability to promote human health. Scientific studies have consistently shown the importance of adequate nutritional intake, and have linked the consumption of between 5 and 9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day to meet the baseline for nutritional health; however, surveys conducted by the CDC and the USDA show that less than 25% of Americans consume these recommended servings. Dietary supplements can help Americans to bring their nutritional intake up to at least the minimum standards.
There are many examples of how dietary supplements can have important health benefits. According to the March of Dimes and the CDC, folic acid taken before and during the first trimester of pregnancy can greatly reduce the risk of having a baby with birth defects such as spina bifida. High calcium intakes, preferably with supplemental vitamin D, magnesium, and boron have been shown to slow the rate of bone loss and help protect against fractures in those suffering from osteoporosis. Scientific research also suggests that people who take vitamins E and C on a regular basis may receive some protection against diseases or conditions caused by oxidative damage, such as heart disease, cancer and cataracts. These are only a few of the many benefits that Americans look to dietary supplements for.
The available safety data for vitamin and mineral supplements documents a remarkable record. Even though over 100 million Americans regularly consume dietary supplements, the number of incidents of serious adverse effects resulting from these supplements is extremely low.
