In this section of my report I will be showing the areas that the tsunami hit and what happened as the waves struck.

The actual Tsunami / Mega-thrust Earthquake occurred at 00:58:53 UTC (Co-ordinated universal time) during the night.

THAILAND: Kao Lak, Ko-Phi-Phi, Phang-Na, Ranong, Trang, Phuket and Krabi

These districts were the worst affected in Thailand where more than 5000 people including many foreigners are believed to have died. These areas of Thailand form the tourist industry.   27 hotel complexes Phuket were decimated and destroyed. 2400 fishing boats were destroyed along with 54,000 farm animals. (The effects of this will be explained later on in the report). 6000 houses, 50 schools and 19 government buildings were destroyed or damaged.

Hundreds of coastal communities in India’s southern states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh were devastated by the Tsunami. At least 1000 people are believed to have died.   Fishermen have been hit hard with many losing their boats on which they depend on for their survival. Around 140,000 people are sheltering in relief centres. The Indian government estimated reconstruction cost around $1.6 billion (U.S.) India in the end, had to seek international aid from other countries for long term aid. This will be further delved into the next section of my essay.
