I’m a 53 year old female, married, mother of 3 and grandmother of 10 children. I married at the age of 16 and dropped out of high school to start my family. I always wanted to finish high school and go to college.   My mother had done the same when she was young.   After having my children and starting them in school my mother and I decided to finish our education. We took a course at the local learning center here in Owensboro, Ky.   To get our GED.   In April of 1983 we passed our course and got our GED. That was a wonderful experience for me to have done that with my mother. She passed away a few years later. I never stopped wanting to return to college someday and get a business degree. After many years of helping my children through school and then later to see all three of them graduate from college my desire grew even more to return to school and earn a degree myself.   I made the decision to give it a try. I started at my local library by checking out that book my mother and I read together called GED Exam Prep.   I studied it and jump started my brain back into the learning mode. After studying it for a while I got the courage up to go to the college and take the compass test.   I was so excited to have passed it and could start my journey back to college.   With all the encouragement my family gave me I felt like a great weight was lifted off my shoulders. This business class is a starting point for me.   I’m ready, willing and able to learn and succeed in getting my degree.   I’m somewhat sad at the same time that my mother cannot enjoy my new journey. Deep down that is part of my drive to accomplish this degree. I love to sew and my plan is to start tailor shop. I’ve sewn Pageant dresses over the years and have done tons of tailoring jobs for indiviuals so I’m not new to the business on that end just need the education side to complete my dream.
