The Role of Education in Our Life

How do we choose who we want to be when we grow up? I do not remember how I decided to go to school; no one was asking me if I want to go there. From my early childhood years, I knew that all children go to school and need to grow up and prepare for this important step in life. In later years, I realized that you should go to a university to obtain a degree in a field that you would like to work in after your graduation. That was the rule that everyone followed in order to be successful in our society. By saying “our” society, I mention the society of big cities in Russia in the early 90’s of 20th century. The funny thing was that by receiving one degree your education process does not end. To succeed in the work place you have to posses some kind of unique professional skills, which will help you stand out from the average worker. Yes, today life is competitive, and education can significantly change the course of a person’s life and help an individual to be successful in a particular society.

First, let’s look at the definition for the word “Education”. I checked a few sources for a good explanation. This one I found on the Internet, “Education is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual; it is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another”. The Webster’s College Dictionary gives us its own definition, “Education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge and of developing the powers of reasoning and judgment.” Although I agree that learning gives us mentioned powers, it has to be first selected, and the knowledge has to be all the society’s knowledge as accumulated.
