Information technology has become such an integral part of communication systems that it's hard to determine where one ends and the other begins.

      Identification

            According to Your Dictionary, communication is defined as a "giving or exchanging of information, signals, or messages as by talk, gestures, or writing." Distributing or relaying information is the essence of communication. Information technology systems and solutions simply expand the ways and means by which people communicate.
      Function
          *

            The Internet, cell phones, smart phones, PDAs, teleconferencing, webinars, texting, skype, instant messaging and Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) are just a few information technologies that are changing the way people communicate. Unlike land-line phones, which tether communicators to a physical location, now people can communicate anywhere, anytime using multiple devices.
      Significance
          *

            Information technology has a dramatic effect on society and workplace interactions. For example, it's changing workplace interoperability, so that geographically dispersed co-workers can interact, collaborate and communicate as if they were physically located in the same office in a downtown office high-rise. This phenomenon allows companies to outsource jobs all over the world.
