Introduction: The very much anticipated Australian novel ‘Tomorrow When the War Began’ by John Marsden successfully incorporates action and adventure. The action adventure genre typically includes fast paced plots, lots of suspenseful moments, tremendous impact, continuous high energy, lots of physical stunts and activity, chase scenes, races, rescues, battles, destructive disasters, and adventurous heroes and violence. All of these elements are found in John Marsden’s novel. These can be seen throughout the plot of the novel, the characters, the settings, and Marsden’s ability to create an action filled and climatic atmosphere. These factors can depict the conventions and understanding of the action/adventure genre, and the way in which it has been corresponded.
Paragraph 1: As we explore this novel, it is evident that there is a development on who the characters once were, and what they have become. This development is important as it clearly demonstrates how they have changed due to the chaotic situations that they have been placed in and the different sides these teenagers are willing to expose. The characters start off as your everyday stereotypical teenagers, nothing out of the ordinary. As in real life, first impressions matter. Teenagers come in all different shapes and sizes, and with this group there is no difference.   As their town is invaded by an anonymous colt of soldiers who evidently indicate that they are not here to make peace, it is clear that they must go to war. Physically and mentally, they are no longer in the same condition they were or ever will be. Their views, belief’s and thoughts have changed as their town is in ruins, and families waiting for their fate to be arrived. The use of violence increases within the characters, showing a different side to each of them as they undergo war conditions.
