Deviants were discriminated in Waknuk due to their physical appearance. Waknuk society had high intolerance of people who were different from the “true Image of God”. They had always known that Deviants were “blasphemy against the true Image of God”. Even though Sophie had the appearance of normal girl, she was born with six toes on each foot. This did not fit the definition of the true Image, thus she had to live a protected life and had to be on her guard all the time so as not to be found out as a Deviant. This is all because that the Waknuk society had zero tolerance for Blasphemies. The people of Waknuk society strongly believes that Deviants are spawns of the Devil and the God sent tribulation to keep the society clean of the Devil's spawns. This eventually caused Sophie to not live a normal live. She was unable to attend schools and did not make friends. David was her only friend. Later on in the story, when she was found out as a Deviant by Alan while playing by the water with David. Sofie's family then decided to flee Waknuk to the Fringes but they were captured in the end, despite David's efforts to keep them safe. According the the law, Sophie was sterilised before being banished to the Fringes. The people of the Waknuk society sees Sophie as a monster that will prevent them from keeping their society clean and thus discriminated against her. They sterilised her to prevent her from producing more Deviants and they can attain their goal of keeping their society clean.
