Many species of animals and plants are in danger of becoming extinct. What are the causes of this problem, and what can be done to prevent it from happening?

Preventing animals and plants from dying out has been a debated issue in recent years, especially after some species have already extinguished. This essay intends to find out the reasons which cause the extinction and suggests some practical solutions.

The causes of extinction are diverse, while human activities mainly result in this phenomenon. The destruction of environment, particularly the forests, leads to loss of natural habitats. This is due to the fact that industry needs the wood or a growing population needs land for agriculture.

Moreover, another significant cause is pollution, which poisons air, land and rivers. This also leads to the extinction of the species living there. Nevertheless, the third cause that cannot be denied is the hunting of rare species for food, medicines and animal products which can be sold at exorbitant prices.

A number of urgent measures need to be taken in order to solve the problem. Firstly, to reduce or stop further deforestation, it is essential that wood for industrial use should be taken only from renewable forests. In addition, local people should be encouraged to make a living by harvesting the natural products that grow in forests, rather than burning forests to grow cash crops such as tobacco. As regards pollution, the only effective way to prevent it is to impose heavy fines on those companies that ignore regulations. This may serve to discourage them from polluting again. Finally, the hunting of rare species must be banned, and an international agency ought to be set up to prevent trading in products made from rare species.
