Occupational Health & Safety Issues in the News

For this assignment I have focused on the state of Indiana and wanted to cover some of the major incidents noted in our state during the year of 2011. I picked an article about the stage collapse in Indianapolis last August, 2011 and I picked the incident that happened to the police officer who was doing his job here in Terre Haute in the month of July, 2011 and ended up being killed. The summary of those injuries is provided below.
1. Indianapolis Stage Collapse
The following incident happened in August 2011while preparing for a concert for the Sugarland musical band. The audience was present and waiting for an exciting concert; however, things did not turn the way they were expected. The incident occurred after a storm toppled scaffolding just as the country band was about to take the stage, a drastic change in the weather has caused a strong wind that has therefore caused the stage to collapse and ended up killing four people and causing 40 injuries. Many parties are being sued and blamed for the injuries and death, the band is being sued and so are other authorities who were involved in the organization of the event.
2. Officer killed in Terre Haute shootout while on duty
This is a deadly on job incident that happened last July 2011, a police officer Brent Long was on duty along with the rest of his team assisting on a fugitive task force. The fugitive violated his probation, which is the reason why the police was chasing him. However, the police forces were not aware that the fugitive was ready for a little visit from the authorities and has cameras everywhere outside of his house to monitor the movement. The police went inside to bust him, but it appeared that he was prepared more for the visit, officer Long bless his soul went in with his K9 partner, the fugitive shot the officer and the K9 partner, the rest of the crew rushed in and went after the fugitive, they had to shoot him.
